Title :Dickie Bird Study

Oil on Canvas

Private Collection

20 x 24 inches

"This started out life as a head sketch for the
main portrait I did of Dickie, but I ended up
completing it, but leaving it looser than perhaps I
normally would. Quite often when men are
painted (especially in a head and shoulders
portrait), they prefer this style, as it can seem
less posed and static. The loose brush work
around the edges and the free background
seem to add a more dynamic hint.
I think Dickie looks very watchful in this- it
seems to have caught that "never miss a trick"
glint! Presumably it is this very aspect that made
him a great umpire! I found Dickie to be like this
all the time - always observing and alert. "
